Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. If then I, the Lord and the Master, have made your feet clean, it is right for you to make one another's feet clean. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. I have given you an example, so that you may do what I have done to you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. Truly I say to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. If these things are clear to you, happy are you if you do them. |
Chapter 27 The skilful traveller leaves no traces of his wheels or footsteps; the skilful speaker says nothing that can be found fault with or blamed; the skilful reckoner uses no tallies; the skilful closer needs no bolts or bars, while to open what he has shut will be impossible; the skilful binder uses no strings or knots, while to unloose what he has bound will be impossible. In the same way the sage is always skilful at saving men, and so he does not cast away any man; he is always skilful at saving things, and so he does not cast away anything. This is called 'Hiding the light of his procedure.' Therefore the man of skill is a master (to be looked up to) by him who has not the skill; and he who has not the skill is the helper of (the reputation of) him who has the skill. If the one did not honour his master, and the other did not rejoice in his helper, an (observer), though intelligent, might greatly err about them. This is called 'The utmost degree of mystery.' |
